Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, offers a quieter, more contemplative pilgrimage experience than Rome, centred on the Basilica of St. Francis and the town's Franciscan heritage.
As the home of St. Francis and St. Clare, founders of the Franciscan and Poor Clare religious orders, Assisi holds deep significance in the history of Catholic monasticism and remains an active site of Franciscan spiritual life.
The Basilica of St. Francis was built shortly after the saint's canonisation in 1228, and the town's hillside setting has changed relatively little, preserving its medieval pilgrimage character.
