Fatima is a major Catholic Marian shrine built around reported apparitions to three shepherd children in 1917, drawing millions of pilgrims to its vast basilica and esplanade each year.
The Sanctuary of Fatima commemorates the reported 1917 Marian apparitions and is one of the most significant Marian pilgrimage sites in the Catholic world, with the anniversary dates (13th of each month, May–October) drawing particularly large crowds.
Following the reported apparitions in 1917, devotion grew steadily through the 20th century, with the sanctuary expanded significantly, including the addition of a large modern basilica completed in 2007.
The 13th of each month from May to October marks the apparition anniversaries and draws the largest pilgrim crowds.
