Grand Bassin, known to Hindu Mauritians as Ganga Talao, is a crater lake considered sacred by the island's large Hindu community, believed to be spiritually connected to the River Ganges.
According to local tradition, the lake's waters are linked to the Ganges, making it the most important Hindu pilgrimage site outside India for many Mauritian Hindus, especially during Maha Shivaratri.
The site's sacred status grew through the 19th and 20th centuries alongside Mauritius's significant Indian-origin Hindu population, brought to the island originally as indentured labourers during the colonial period.
Year-round, with Maha Shivaratri (February/March) drawing enormous crowds, when pilgrims walk to the site from across the island.
Modest dress is appropriate; several temples surround the lake, each with their own customs — footwear is removed before entering temple areas.
