Harar Jugol, the walled historic town of Harar, is traditionally regarded by many Muslims as the fourth holiest city in Islam, known for its exceptionally high concentration of historic mosques within its compact walled old town.
The town's dense concentration of mosques and shrines within a small walled area reflects centuries of Islamic scholarship and trade that made Harar an important religious centre in the Horn of Africa.
Harar developed as a significant Islamic centre from around the 10th century onward, growing into a major hub of Islamic learning and trade in the region, with much of its walled old town architecture surviving intact today.
