The Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in North Africa, and the city itself is traditionally regarded as Islam's fourth holiest city.
Kairouan holds deep historical significance as one of the earliest centres of Islamic learning in North Africa, with the Great Mosque serving as a model for mosque architecture across the wider Maghreb region.
Founded in 670 CE, the mosque has been rebuilt and expanded across subsequent centuries, with much of its current form dating to the 9th century under the Aghlabid dynasty.
