Shwedagon Pagoda is a gilded stupa dominating Yangon's skyline and among the most revered Buddhist sites in the world, believed by tradition to enshrine relics of four Buddhas.
The pagoda is central to Burmese Buddhist life and is said to house relics associated with four Buddhas, including strands of hair from Gautama Buddha, making it one of Buddhism's most important reliquary sites.
The pagoda's origins are traditionally dated back over 2,500 years by local legend, though its documented history spans many centuries, with the current gilded structure the result of continuous rebuilding, expansion and gilding over time.
November to February offers the coolest, most comfortable weather for visiting.
Modest dress is required and shoes must be removed before entering the pagoda platform, as at all Burmese Buddhist sites.
